Creating systems that make a difference to people.
“We never set out to employ a diverse workforce but with 8 out of 20 employees speaking a different language we seem to have created a small global village in Whitby” says David Pimblott managing director of Porirua based GIS (Geographic Information Systems) company Explorer Graphics Ltd.
Internationalisation is the name of the game for cartographers David and Beryl Pimblott. Since starting in 1987, Explorer Graphics Ltd has expanded into America and India and has offices in Queenstown and Auckland.
"Early on we realised that if we wanted to grow from contract mapping to actually providing specialist applications built around GIS technology, we needed to expand internationally. We employ people with specialised skills so that we can capitalise on supplying high value, high cost expertise to our international clients. Our aim is to establish a GIS Centre of Excellence here in Wellington.” says David.
“Essentially Explorer Graphics Ltd integrates many different forms of data from different systems and displays it in a geographical way” explains David. Twenty years ago when Explorer Graphics was founded, GIS technology was the preserve of a few, but now with the increasing popularity of geographical tools such as Google maps, Explorer Graphics Ltd’s market has not only increased it has become more familiar with the technology and its capabilities”.
“Our company motto is integration, innovation and commitment and we aim to ensure that this is true for all aspects of our business, from our client interactions, our relationships with our commercial partners, right down to how we treat our staff”.
This seems to have paid off with Explorer Graphics picking up the prestigious ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute) Partnership Award earlier this year.
“It is wonderful to be able to run an internationally successful business from one of the most impressive cities in the world.”
