The 'Coolest Little Capital in the World'

We talked with the region's businesses and asked them why they choose to work, live and play in Wellington. We asked them what made the region unique and what would help them to promote Wellington’s businesses internationally. Here is what they said.

We call it the Wellington Story.

We encourage you to use all of it, or parts of it in your communications.

Wellington city is concentrated and compact. It’s easy to get around and our sense of community and connectedness is strong. We offer all the benefits of a big city but without the hassle. That’s why Wellington  is the 'Best Little Capital in the World’. 

We take pride in our capital status. Wellington is home to national treasures like Te Papa Tongarewa, the Museum of New Zealand, the National Library and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

We celebrate our arts and culture. Museums and theatres flourish here and we are home to internationally acclaimed events like The New Zealand International Festival of the Arts, World of Wearable Arts, and Toast Martinborough.

We eat well. The Wellington region is renowned as a cuisine capital, not only for its award winning restaurants and sophisticated café culture but also for the celebrated vineyards of Martinborough region and Kapiti Coast’s horticulture and market garden industry.

We are a smart region. High quality education is close to our hearts. It starts in our primary schools and flows all the way through to our world ranked universities. Wellingtonians are more highly trained and educated than New Zealanders as a whole, and also have higher incomes.

We encourage co-operation and collaboration. From web to fashion design, science to art, music to digital innovation, world changing businesses are thriving here. Wellington encapsulates the Kiwi spirit. It is diverse and sophisticated, yet quietly confident.

We are proud of our innovation, of our creativity, of our ability to create a place where people have space to think.

Made up of five cities and districts, our region is blessed with remarkable landscapes. To the west lie kilometres of beach, untouched native forests and the magnificent Kapiti Island. To the east, vineyards and olive groves pepper the landscape of the Wairarapa. At the heart, the capital city Wellington is built in a hilly amphitheatre around a deep harbour.

People are really caring more about what they consume and will taste something new.”
