Cultivating Food

The Wellington region has significant and diverse areas of highly productive land on both its eastern and western sides. It also has a vibrant food and beverage culture which is being fostered by Grow Wellington via the “Wellington Food Story” Project. The emphasis from the primary sector is to develop the produce sector to specifically cater for the region’s consumptive needs.

Geoff Copps says “Discussions have begun with institutions such as HortResearch and Crop and Food Research about securing Research and Development activity for the region. At present they operate all around the region but not in it. Conducting targeted research into premium food products within the region with the benefit of having a ready-made test market on their doorstep.”

This activity will be linked in with existing tertiary providers such as Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre who are looking to provide R & D exposure for their students.
